How busy dads can plan a monthly date night (and actually keep it)
Short answer: busy dads keep a monthly date night by deciding once, not every month. Pick a standing night, book a standing sitter, rotate between a few kinds of dates, always have a backup, and set reminders 7 days, 5 days and the day of. The whole system takes about 30 minutes to set up and 10 minutes a month to run.
Date night doesn't die because nobody cares. It dies in the planning: work runs late, there's a recital Thursday, and by 9 PM nobody wants to research restaurants. Here's how to take the planning off the table.
Step 1: Pick a standing night
Choose one: "the second Saturday" or "the first Thursday." Put it on both calendars as a recurring event now, for the next 12 months. When a conflict comes up, you move it, but you never have to remember to start it.
Tip: weeknights are cheaper and easier. Restaurants have tables, bowling at Pinewood is $67.50 a lane Monday through Thursday versus $90 on weekends, and sitters are less booked.
Step 2: Lock a standing sitter
Ask your favorite sitter for the same night every month. Most sitters love predictable work. Budget for it: Care.com puts Nashville's average starting rate at $20.67 an hour (October 2026), so a 3-hour date is about $62 and a 4-hour date about $83.
Write a one-page sitter checklist once (bedtimes, allergies, Wi-Fi, emergency numbers, Poison Control 1-800-222-1222) and text it the day before.
Step 3: Use a 2-out, 2-in month
Two nights out and two nights in keeps it fresh without blowing up the budget:
| Week | Type | Nashville example | |---|---|---| | 1 | Out: dinner | Rolf and Daughters or Butcher & Bee | | 2 | In: after bedtime | Chocolate tasting or a record swap | | 3 | Out: something to do | The Listening Room Cafe, Game Terminal or The Climb (Nashville West / Nashville East) | | 4 | In: themed dinner | Bartender's Choice pasta night |
Step 4: Rotate categories so it never gets stale
Keep a short list in each bucket and rotate: dinner, drinks, live music, active, outdoors, cheap, and at-home. Our 60 Nashville date ideas are sorted exactly this way.
Step 5: Always have a backup
- No table? Have a second spot within walking distance (for example, Henrietta Red if Rolf and Daughters is full).
- Rain? Keep an indoor option ready. See rainy-day dates.
- Sitter cancels? Flip to an at-home date the same night, same time.
Step 6: Set three reminders
- 7 days out: confirm the sitter.
- 5 days out: make the reservation or buy tickets. The The Bluebird Cafe opens Tuesday–Thursday seats one week ahead at 8 AM CT, so this matters.
- Day of, 4 PM: "Leave at 6:25. IDs. Sitter checklist sent?"
Step 7: Rate it
After every date, each of you scores it 1–5 in one text. In three months you'll know exactly what kind of night you both love.
Or let someone else run the system
That's what Date Night Dad does: the standing schedule, the plans, the backups, the sitter checklist and the reminders. You just show up.
