At-home date night ideas after the kids go to bed
Short answer: the best at-home date nights have a start time, one thing to do together, and phones in a drawer. Wait until the last kid is down (around 8:15 for most families), give it 90 minutes, and pick something with a small "event" feeling: a tasting, a swap, a challenge or a themed dinner. No sitter needed, and most cost under $50.
The after-bedtime formula
- 8:15 Start. Lights low, playlist on, phones away.
- One activity you do together, not side by side.
- One thing to eat or drink that isn't the usual.
- One question you don't normally ask each other.
- Done by 10. Tomorrow still starts at 6.
1. Chocolate tasting with Olive & Sinclair
Order the 4-bar variety pack (about $42) from At-home kit: Olive & Sinclair chocolate tasting, the stone-ground chocolate made in East Nashville. Unwrap the bars without looking, taste each one, score them 1–10, and argue about the winner.
2. Goo Goo + Tennessee whiskey pairing
Nashville's candy, Nashville's whiskey. Get a Goo Goo gift set (about $30) and a bottle you like; Nelson Bros. Classic from Nelson's Green Brier Distillery is about $40. One small pour, one cluster, rate each pairing. Details: At-home kit: Goo Goo + Tennessee whiskey pairing. (21+, and go easy: kids wake up early.)
3. Blind record swap
Each of you secretly buys one record for the other at Grimey's on Trinity Lane (about $25–40 a record). Play both, side A and side B, and explain your pick only after the last song. Details: At-home kit: Grimey's record night.
4. Book swap and first chapter
Same idea, quieter. Pick a book for each other at Parnassus Books in Green Hills, then read the first chapter aloud over dessert. Details: At-home kit: Parnassus book swap.
5. Hot chicken heat ladder
Pick up takeout from Prince's Hot Chicken (South) or Hattie B's Hot Chicken (Midtown) before the kids' dinner, at a range of heat levels. After bedtime, work up the ladder. Last one standing picks the movie. Keep milk nearby. Details: At-home kit: Hot chicken takeout + heat ladder.
6. Living-room BBQ picnic
Blanket on the floor, string lights, takeout from Martin's Bar-B-Que Joint (Downtown) or Edley's Bar-B-Que (12 South), and an old-country playlist. Pie for dessert. Details: At-home kit: Living-room BBQ picnic.
7. Bartender's Choice pasta night
From our sample plan: each of you names a spirit (or zero-proof), a flavor and a mood, and the other makes the drink. No recipes. Then cook rigatoni together, one of you on sauce, one on pasta and bread, and eat at the table, not the couch.
Shopping list: rigatoni, good marinara or ragu, parmesan, sourdough, salted butter, arugula, lemon, a bottle of wine or two spirits you both like, club soda, citrus, honey, ice, dark chocolate.
8. The "first date" re-run
Recreate your first date at home: the same food (or the closest takeout), the same music, and the same outfit if it still fits. Ask: "What did you think of me that night, honestly?"
Conversation questions to keep handy
- What's one thing we did before kids that we should bring back?
- What's a small thing I do that you secretly love?
- If we had a free Saturday with no kids and no chores, what would we do, hour by hour?
Make it a habit
